│░░░░ INTRODUCTION ░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░│
└────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┘
FreeMem will graphically display a variety of system statistics. It will show
you detailed memory and disk information, as well as display a memory/disk
usage graph and other system information.
Features:
■ Displays DOS memory stats and usage
■ Detects and displays EMS/XMS memory stats
■ Displays floppy/hard disk stats and usage
■ Displays drive type (Local, Network, SUBST, RAM Disk, CD-ROM)
■ Displays CPU type
■ Displays video display type
■ Displays DOS version (DR-DOS and OS/2 aware)
■ Detects DPMI

│░░░░ USAGE ░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░│
└────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┘
To run FreeMem, use the command-line shown below.
FREEMEM [drive]
If no drive is given, FreeMem will default to the drive it is located on.
While FreeMem is loaded, you can use the following keys:
F1 - Displays total space over all disk drives (except for
floppies and CD-ROMs)
Up/Right Arrow - Advance One Drive
Down/Left Arrow - Retreat One Drive
Any other key press will cause FreeMem to quit.
┌────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┐
│░░░░ PROGRAM AUTHENTICITY ░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░│
└────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┘
FreeMem has been archived with PKWARE's PKZIP 2.04g using Authenticity
Verification. When you unzip the archive, you should see "-AV" displayed
after every file name. When completed, a message that looks like this will
be displayed:
Authentic files Verified! # KRK282
Cris McRae
If this authenticity statement is not displayed, or the authenticity code is
not "KRK282", then you have a copy of FreeMem that has been tampered with.
Do >not< use any of the files contained within a tampered archive, as they
may contain viruses, trojans, or other harmful things.
FreeMem has also been encrypted by a powerful encryption program. If the
executable file is tampered with, it will display a CRC warning and will not
run.

│░░░░ REGISTRATION ░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░│
└────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┘
FreeMem is shareware. This gives the user an opportunity to evaluate the
program before actually registering the software. If, after a 30 day period,
you wish to continue to use FreeMem, you are required to register your copy
of FreeMem with the author. To register, send your $10 US check or money
order to:
Cris McRae
P.O. Box 1351
Burbank, CA 91507
With your payment, please enclose the name you would like FreeMem registered
under. This is usually your full name. Please make sure to print clearly,
because the registration number is dependent on your name.
When I receive your registration, I will then mail you your registration
number and instructions on how to "register" your copy of FreeMem. Your
registration number will be valid for the current and all subsequent
versions of FreeMem.
Note: Registration system used is REGKEY.

│░░░░ REVISIONS ░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░│
└────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┘
Version 1.0 (06/24/91)
■ Initial code written. Not publically released.
■ Not graphical.
■ Only detected DOS 3.31 (in use on my system).
Version 1.1 (07/07/91)
■ Not publically released.
■ Added detection of more DOS versions.
Version 1.2 (07/10/91)
■ Not publically released.
■ Added EMS detection.
Version 1.3 (08/13/91)
■ Not publically released.
■ Nothing new added.
Version 1.4 (10/16/91)
■ Initial public release
Version 2.0 (02/24/93)
■ Total re-write of code in C
■ Direct screen writes implemented
■ New graphical design
■ Displays EMS/XMS memory statistics
■ Displays CPU type
■ Displays video display type
■ Displays DOS version (DR-DOS aware)
■ Detects DPMI usage
Version 2.1 (01/16/95)
■ Made Free DOS memory report more reliable. Also, I was notified that this
value is unreliable under DR-DOS. If you're using DR-DOS, the Free DOS
memory report will not be correct. If you are unhappy with this, move to
MS-DOS. Note that sometimes it is hard to get an accurate value for the
free DOS memory, especially when running FreeMem in a DOS shell. In a
plain DOS environment this value should be accurate. If it doesn't match
exactly to DOS's MEM.EXE value, don't worry about it.
■ Fixed Total XMS memory report. Now properly reports the total amount.
■ Fixed current drive detection. When run without a command-line parameter,
FreeMem would report the current drive stats of the drive where
FREEMEM.EXE was located, instead of the stats for the current drive.
■ Optimized code
■ Added OS/2 detection
■ Added ability to check total drive space over all drives with the F1 key.
■ Added ability to change drives with the arrow keys. Up and right advance
one drive. Down and left retreat one drive.
■ Added support for network drives.
■ Now reports drive type (Local, Network, SUBST, RAM Disk, or CD-ROM).
■ Optimized FreeMem's drive gathering routines. It now grabs all the drive
information prior to displaying the information screen. Thus there are
never any drives accesses >unless< you access a floppy drive.
■ Added support for CD-ROM drives.
■ Added multitasker support, so FreeMem gives up timeslices when polling
for keystrokes.
